Lucy, Breast Cancer Survivor Without medical research, cancer would have been a death sentence for me. There has been cancer in my family for generations; my mother was the first to survive breast cancer. Thanks to medical research into familial cancers, I was found to carry the BRCA2 breast cancer susceptibility gene. I received immediate scans which showed I had very early stage of breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy and now have only a 2% chance of developing the cancer that killed my grandmother, my great grandmother and so many more.
